Health care and retirement benefits are complicated. It’s a big puzzle – and I enjoy putting the pieces together for my clients. Clients need someone to help them understand the many rules and regulations – so that they can provide the benefits their employees value.
Possibly the most important thing I do is to translate those rules and regulations into plain English. I love hearing my clients say, “Wow, that was a lot easier than I expected.”
I graduated from Rice University with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering. I’m a numbers guy, unlike most lawyers. Virtually all employee benefits have some sort of tax advantage, which is typically coupled with rules that are designed to prevent highly-paid employees from receiving “too much” of any particular benefit. These rules are often referred to as nondiscrimination tests. You want to provide great benefits in a cost-effective manner. You have some flexibility in tailoring your benefit offerings, but that flexibility is hemmed in by the various non-discrimination tests. I understand the tests, and how the tests work, and together we can design the benefits that are right for your company.
